See your vineyard
from orbit
before you walk the rows
Satellite imagery turns free public data into a clear picture of your vineyard’s health, water balance, frost risk and growth stage - refreshed every few days. It ships as part of VineyardElf, not as a separate product to manage. The same layers work for orchards, hop gardens and open fields too.
Six layers, one map
NDVI - plant health
The vegetation index shows where vines thrive and where they weaken - before it is visible from the ground. Computed from Sentinel-2 at 10 m, every 5 days, with history since 2017.
Water stress
NDWI and NDRE indices reveal where the canopy starts saving water and where there is too much - linked to the rainfall forecast, with optional OpenSprinkler integration.
Thermal maps
Land Surface Temperature from Landsat maps cold pockets where spring frost gathers and warm slopes - a frost-risk map you make once and use every spring.
Phenology & GDD
Growing degree days plus the seasonal NDVI curve predict budbreak, flowering and harvest to within a few days - so treatments and picking are planned, not guessed.
Parcel map
Draw your parcels in the browser with Scout Map - no GIS, no shapefiles. In VineyardElf the structure, varieties and treatment history load automatically.
Alerts
A sudden drop in health or water, or a rising frost risk, triggers an alert - the data comes to you, instead of waiting in yet another portal.
Four steps. No hardware.
Mark your parcels
Draw the boundaries in the browser, or let VineyardElf load them for you.
We pull the imagery
Sentinel-2 and Landsat scenes are fetched automatically every few days.
We compute the layers
NDVI, water, thermal and phenology are calculated and turned into readable maps.
You get maps & alerts
Ready results and notifications - no drones, no installation, no magic.
Honest about limits: optical satellites cannot see through clouds, so there are occasional gaps - we add SAR (radar) and Planet Labs (3 m, daily) where more is needed. And at 10 m a pixel mixes vines with the row spacing, so the trend matters more than a single reading. The satellite does not replace walking the rows - it tells you exactly which row to walk.
Good to know
How much does it cost?+
Satellite data is a feature of VineyardElf - free during the beta, later part of the VineyardElf subscription. There is no separate satellite pricing.
Where does the data come from?+
Mainly Sentinel-2 (ESA, free, 10 m, every 5 days) and Landsat (NASA, thermal). For demanding cases we add Planet Labs (3 m, daily), enabled per parcel.
What about clouds?+
Optical satellites are blind under clouds, so there are gaps. Radar (Sentinel-1 SAR) sees through them and gives soil moisture regardless of the weather.
Is it only for vineyards?+
Vineyards are our first deployment and proof it works. The same layers - NDVI, water, thermal - apply to orchards, hop gardens and open fields.
